LOCKHEED FEDERAL CREDIT UNION ANNOUNCES JANUARY ‘STUDENT OF THE MONTH’ WINNERS BURBANK, CALIFORNIA, February 8, 2005 — Lockheed Federal Credit Union (LFCU) announced today two winners of their "Student of the Month" program for the month of January. Saugus High School senior Megan Buehler and Arroyo Seco Junior High eighth grader Katherine Stradling were both named as winners for their outstanding achievement in academics and citizenship. Winners for each school were chosen by their principals and sent to LFCU for recognition in their newly launched program within the William S. Hart School District. Seventeen year-old Megan Buehler is an outstanding student who maintains a 3.74 GPA, consistently ranking within the top 10% of her class. In addition she is a remarkable leader on campus, serving as Associate Student Body President after serving as Class President for all three previous years and currently is President of the Hart District Student Communication Council. She is an accomplished swimmer on the Varsity girl’s team and involved in community programs that support anti-drug campaigns and student involvement in local government. Thirteen year-old Katherine Stradling is another outstanding student who has overcome personal hardship but maintains exceptional academic standing as well as continues to take on leadership roles within her community. Katherine has undergone two brain surgeries in the past few months to release pressure from, and hopefully prevent, and arachnoid cyst. Despite severe headaches, nausea and difficult recovery after both surgeries, Katherine has always maintained a "can do" attitude and returned to school as soon as she could, even though she was eligible for home study. Katherine serves in the Associated Student Body and has participated in Track and Honor Society, as well as playing the piano and participating in community involvement through her church’s youth group. Additionally, Katherine has exhibited generosity and concern for others. Despite her own health challenges, Katherine realized that there were many other in difficult situations and she created a selfless Christmas list to contribute money to a fund that provides children hospitalized during the holidays with teddy bears. Her science teacher, John Olson, describes Katherine as, "A real hero!" LFCU’s "Student of the Month" program is recognizing two students per month throughout the academic year. Within the program a student from each high school and junior high within the William S. Hart District will be recognized. Winning high school students receive a cash prize of $250 and junior high students receive a savings bond worth $250. In both cases the student’s school will also receive $250 cash to their booster club fund. LFCU currently does similar programs recognizing outstanding athletes within the district.
